Ghana coup update: senior police officer, doctor and oda pipo wey dem allegedly behind coup plot

Ghana’s Attorney General renews state efforts to prosecute suspects behind an alleged plot to remove Prez Akufo-Addo from power.

Say after the suspects were re-arrested last week on Saturday, they bring them to court and bring a new charge – high treason against them.

Of the 10 suspects, authorities alleged that senior police officer ACP Benjamin Agordzo was the leader of the coup plot.

So who is ACP Benjamin Agordzo?

The Deputy Commissioner of Police has over 26 years of experience in the Ghana Police Service. In his field of specialty, he is investigating, training and developing human resources in police operations;

In 2006, he was responsible for training security forces in Sudan, where the African Union Mission maintains the peace.

Around 2010, he became Deputy Director of Human Resource Development in Recruitment for the Ghana Police College.

In 2015, he served as the Director of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, where he played a key role in preparing Ghana for the 2016 elections.


In terms of education, he completed the University of Cape Coast in 1997 plus a sociology degree with distinction.

He continued his studies in a diploma program where he obtained a first class Bachelor of Education.

He completes in MPhil fir Norway in Education where he studies for Norsk Laererakademi, Norway

Finally, he is pursuing a doctorate in human rights and politics by 2020, which he completes with distinction.

Dr Agordzo describes himself as an international training expert, lecturer, educator facilitator, researcher, consultant, peacekeeper in many multicultural contexts, including two missions in Sudan and Somalia.

Ghanaian security officials say he helped the mastermind behind an alleged coup plot, Dr Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, in some eight other suspects.

Ghana’s security officials said the mastermind of the coup plot was medical doctor Fred Yao Mac-Palm.

The alleged mastermind of a coup plot, Dr Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, said the organization he formed – Take Action Ghana (TAG) – was not interested in planning to a coup, but instead planned to hold a protest to draw attention to the poor governance in the country.

According to him, the political class was afraid of the impact that TAG would have in the country and that is why the group had been accused of plotting a coup.

Eight putschists accused

In addition to the senior police officer and the doctor, eight other suspects are on the government’s list as accomplices in the coup.

Dem dey include Col. Samuel Kodzo Gameli, Warrant Officer II Esther Saan Dekuwine, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, Lance Corporal Sylvester Akanpewon, Johannes Zikpi, Civilian Employee of the Armed Forces of Ghana (GAF), Donyo Kafui, aka Ezor, who is blacksmith den Bright Alan Debrah, Fleet Manager.

Context of the coup plot

In 2019, Ghana’s security agencies arrest a group called Take Action Ghana, which is planning to overthrow the government.

Security agencies are organizing a dawn operation to arrest suspects who are planning in detail how they will take control of the country.

According to the Ministry of Information, Ghana’s security agencies carry out a joint operation for 15 months during which they investigate evidence of the suspects’ activities.

Some of the defendants, Dr Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, Ezor Kafui and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, according to security officials, are targeting young people to radicalize them as part of their plans.

The defendants who form the Take Action Ghana (TAG) group are targeting key state facilities like Jubilee House, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, National Communications Authority in connection with a coup plot.

After new charges, the court granted a request for bail pending the next hearing on May 25, 2021.
