What was supposed to be a festive season of cheer and celebration for Khethokwakhe Zondo and his family turned into tragedy when he passed away six days after graduation.
Zondo, 30, died on his way to hospital on December 16, a week after celebrating his medical degree. Zondo’s family, still in shock, told News24 they suspected he had been poisoned.
“He got sick so quickly. We assume he was poisoned [with a slow poisoning] the way things turned out. He passed away on December 16, 2021 on his way to hospital, ”Zondo’s sister Nomthandazo said.
The father of a resident of Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, studied medicine in Cuba as part of the South Africa-Cuba medical education program, and Nomthandazo said all he wanted to do was provide a better life and better opportunities for her two-year-old. son and family.
“He wanted to open a real estate and logistics business with his sister as a partner, then build a two-story house for his family. He wanted the best life for his son and a better education. We’re not doing it at all. It is difficult to accept. He was the support of his family, ”Nomthandazo told News24.
Colleagues and people who knew Zondo took to social media to share their grief and condolences, posting one of the last photos he took with his son where Zondo is seen wearing his discount cap and hood diplomas.

After enrolling, Zondo had first started studying engineering at Umfolozi College, which he later left after receiving the scholarship to study in Cuba.
